Eating Healthy for Life

This is probably one of my favorite Halloween crafts for children. It is fast and easy, can be done with a crowd if necessary, and also is an excellent way to go through cutting and fine motor skills with younger kids. Older children can let their imaginations take over and put together some really crazy Halloween spiders!

What you'll need:

Black construction paper

Scissors

Glue or sticky-tape

Funny eyes (optional) or scraps of paper and pens

Instructions:

Cut a rectangle of paper roughly 3 inches by 3 1/2 inches. Fold the shorter side over almost an inch to make a crease, then unfold it up again.

Turn the paper so that the crease is horizontal, and cut the paper in 7 even lines up to the pleat to create eight spider's legs. For smaller children, draw in the outline for them to repeat cutting on. When working with older children, show them how to produce the first cut in the center, dividing the space beneath the crease into 2 halves. Then demonstrate to them how to divide each half once more to produce quarters, and then the quarters making eighths. There is no need to be too precise.

Now wrap the spider around the child's finger then fasten using sticky-tape or glue. Detach the spider again and decorate - either with scraps of paper or else with googly eyes. Put the spider once again on the finger and twist the legs into shape or you could curl them around a pencil.

Variations:

Suspend the spiders! Just cut a length of black yarn (wool) and attach on the head of the spider using a small bit of sticky-tape.

Make smaller versions of these spiders to adorn the ends of Halloween pencils.

Wrap little spiders around straws to adorn your Halloween table! Craft some bigger spiders and distribute them around the table as well.

Cut an ever so small slit on both sides of the spider's head and include a name card to turn these spiders into spooky place markers!

Once the body of the spider is made but prior to decorating, place a black pipe cleaner round the head of the spider to give a furry effect. The protruding edge of the pipe cleaner can be bent right into a hook shape, that will make the spider painless to suspend from shelves, the tops of doors, and any number of spooky places! Glue googly eyes on the top of the pipe cleaner.
